It’s all about the heart!

1 Timothy 1:19 KJV Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:

This verse is teaching us how important it is to have our hearts right. We must have faith in God, we must firmly trust Him. A good conscience speaks of knowing right from wrong and choosing to do what you know is right. Otherwise, we can make a mess of things, even our life.

  1. God sees the innerworkings of our hearts and minds and he cares about the condition of our inner man. 1 Chronicles 28:9 KJV And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the Lord searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever. GOD KNOWS, we may be able to hide things from our parents, our teachers, etc, but we can’t hide anything from God.
  2. God knows our lifestyle and cares about its condition and influence. Romans 13:13 KJV Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. This verse shows that God not only cares about our inward self but our outward life too, our conversation and our walk.
  3. God wants us to deal with both our hearts and our lifestyle. Colossians 1:10 KJV That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; Galatians 5:22-25 KJV But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Temperance-showing moderation or self-resistance. God has called us to make careful choices about our lives. The verses above teach us to grow in the knowledge of God and to be a good example.

1 Peter 1:22 teaches us to purify our souls-that’s inward, and then to love one another fervently-that’s outward. If we start on the inside (the heart), the outside (our lifestyle, walk, conversation), is sure to follow. Matthew 12:34-35 KJV O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. Proverbs 4:23 KJV Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
